If anyone who had known Asher and Jason back in St. Louis was to see them now, they wouldn't believe that the two were the same people.

If anyone who had met them three months ago was to take a real good look at them now, they would know something was wrong. The tension between them was growing, and Jason didn't know how to fix it.

First had come the request for them to wait on last two marks. Many of the New York City kiss had worried about a new master coming in with a very new human servant. Then had come the meetings. Almost every night they happened, with Jason attending less and less. He was seeing Asher for maybe two hours a night, but he was hiding how upset he was at that, telling himself it was for their future.

Another phone call had come tonight, from Lady Rhiannon's servant. Asher was needed for another council, and no Jason wasn't needed, he'd just be bored sitting there all night.

Jason was beginning to believe that nagging little thought in the back of his head that the Master of the city was after Asher, and not just as another strong member of her political foundation. That she wanted a companion and had decided on Asher. The constant meetings, the insistance of him attending to her during outings, the little touches and looks. And really, who could blame her? Asher was beautiful, intelligent, well spoken. He was the perfect example of his times.

And who could blame him for choosing the lady's company over Jason? She was his equal in every way, where as Jason... He was just some dumb puppy who loved someone who was far above him.

The voice didn't help the situation, in fact it just added to his anger and depression at the stiuation. Which was adding to the tension in their home.

Turning to look out the window, Jason fights back a growl, trying to think of something else. It wouldn't do to make Asher angry before the meeting, because it would just lead to him being home later than normal.

He hadn't bothered to take off his tux when they had returned home, merely tossed his coat and tie on the couch and unbuttoned his shirt. He would be lying to say he wasn't nervous. Worried as well.

Worried that Asher would find out later on that he had made a mistake and there was no taking it back.

Sitting on the couch, he watches his lover, trying to calm his nerves.

"I heard that... Um, I remember someone saying that Anita took all the marks at once before. Is that possible?"

Fancy dresses. Tuxes. A seven course dinner followed by a slow precision into the auditorium. Then three hours of absolute torture.

Well, Jason couldn't call it that. Maybe he would actually enjoy it if he understood Russian. Why did it have to be in Russian anyway? What was wrong with French or Spanish? At least then he would know what was going on besides that chick had been sold to that guy, then kidnapped by another guy and now he was lost.

He was managing not to fidget or sigh, keeping his eyes on the ballet and acting interested. All in the interest of keeping the silly and gaudily dressed tarts and bastards they were with happy, when all he wanted to do was go back to the apartment and watch CSI reruns.

Which was just more proof that he was out of his league and left him wondering if he was truly worth being offered the marks to become Asher's servant.

Conflicting emotions

April 30th, 2006 (05:57 pm)

Most of the time, Jason hated the city, hated being cooped up inside the loft, feeling caged. There was no wilderness in New York, at least not anything that wasn't already claimed and being fought over. And he wasn't desperate enough to haunt the zoo yet. Most days he occasionally wished they were someplace smaller and more peaceful than here.

Nights like tonight though, he loved. The windows were wide open and the sky was clear, letting the lights and noise of the city in. Sitting on one of the window seats, his back against the window frame, a drink cradled in his hands, Jason took it all in. Nights like tonight made him want to never leave this place.

Jason hated politics. It was one thing when visitors had come to St Louis, he was usually able to get away as soon as the 'greet and bite' was over with.

This was different though, they were the visitors here. There was no cleather and bondage gear here, it was all well-cut business suits and cocktail dresses. Hardly any of the conversations were in english, and the few languages he did know were spoken in dialects he didn't recognize. The faces were all a blur, above him in more ways than one.

All in all, Jason felt like a child among them, and he was. Between not being able to understand anyone and finding out that even the smallest woman here towered over him in her heels, Jason was wishing he'd left with the other pommes instead of taking Asher's option of staying here.

Not that Asher would notice if he left, caught up as he was in some conversation. Jason was watching it from the corner of his eye, reminding himself it would be very bad for them if he went over and tried to rip that redhead's hand off for touching his Asher. Reminding himself that here he was only a pomme, and a pomme didn't have any rights.

Suddenly Jason jerks awake, finding himself laying in a pool of sunshine and not in some underground layer. He looks around and squints at the windows, throwing his magazine and hitting the wall below the open window, scaring off the pigeon that had woken him. His head falls back onto the floor and he stares at the ceiling. It was just a stupid dream, his fears and worries manifesting in his mind and finding an outlet, or so Sylvia's girlfriend would have told him.

He'd taken care of things today, had food delivered from some little market that the doorman recommended, sunproofed the bedroom. He'd even gotten around to unpacking and ordering few books. And he'd paiid for everything in cash, considering he'd closed out his account after paying for his plane ticket.

Sighing, he rolled and stood, closing the window and heading into the bedroom. Curling up beside Asher, he closed his eyes and tried to go back to sleep. He'd keep his nightmares to himself and leave things in Asher's hands.

Diary Room

April 6th, 2006 (11:18 pm)

Jason wanders into the Diary Room and sits in the chair. He stares at the camera for a while before speaking.

"I lost this challenge, since Hojo disappeared and I can't get Ray to pants him. That Janet girl is gone too. We haven't been told why, and none of us have really been talking about it. It's kinda freaky when you wake up one morning and two people are missing, along with their belongings. Yeah, it's opened up two beds, but one is in the bitch's room, which I won't step foot in. The other is the bed Hojo had, and there's no way in hell I'm sleeping there. I'll stick with the hammock out back, which is actually pretty comfortable."

He shifts a bit, looking off at a corner.

"I thought things were going to be better coming here, and for the most part they are. Kate and Sarah are awesome. Cora's a blast. Lex and Lucian are cool. Edmondo is okay. Ray's... confusing. Sometimes I feel like he's sizing me up and comparing me to the Jason he knows, and it's annoying. Draco and Abi are the biggest problems though. I don't know whether Draco is scared of me or hates me. Abi, well I know she detests me and would laugh and point if I was set on fire."

He shrugs and rolls his shoulders.

"I should have known that even here I'd be hated. All because I'm a werewolf who's involved with a vampire. I haven't done shit to her, Asher hasn't done shit to her, yet she still refuses to see me as anything other than a monster. Fucking bitch."

He mutters the last, curling up a bit.

"I miss Asher. I don't say anything around the others because... well, I'm not stupid. The last thing I need is the bitch overhearing and saying shit. I don't think I could deal with that. Not to mention it's none of their business."

He looks down at his hands, his voice low.

"I miss him."

He's quiet for a while longer, then gets up and leaves the room.

Diary Room

March 20th, 2006 (06:55 pm)

Jason enters the room, his personal items in hand. He sets them on the table below the camera before taking a seat in the chair.

"Hey Nexus, I'm Jason Schuyler. The new one, without the pard."

He shakes his head, looking a bit amused. "It's a little weird saying that, because it's not be, but it is. Sorta."

"I'm a werewolf and pomme de sange for the Master Vampire of St Louis. I decided I needed a vacation from everything and signed up for this game."

The room is silent for a moment, then he starts talking again.

"The house is okay, the bed situation could get a bit complicated, but that's why I'm taking a hammock. My housemates? Well, of the ones I've met so far..."

"Lex, he seems like a nice guy, but I know the type. The only difference between him and the vampires of my world is that Lex can walk in the sunlight and he doesn't need to drink blood to survive. Otherwise, he has that same 'I look innocent but really I'm plotting how to steal your soul' vibe going on."

"Ray is... annoying. In that little brother that you're trying to kick out of your room way. Yeah, he's a nice guy, but he's too much sometimes."

"Edmondo, he's naive. He's gonna be eaten alive in here. Not literally though. And apparently he's with Ray?"

"Sarah is a sweet girl, and a newbie. It'll be interesting to see how different her beast is from mine."

"Cora is... Cora is gonna be a riot, I just know it. And that Lucian kid too. Something tells me the two of them are going to be causing a lot of trouble."

"The blond brit kid, is a fucking annoyance. I'm betting he ends up getting the shit jobs and whines to go home every fucking day."

"What's her name, that clone girl, Jane? Janet? Something. Anyway, it'll be fun to talk to her."

"Whistler. Very close-minded and angry. I don't see us getting along unless she starts to thaw out a bit."

He shrugs, looking around.

"So, I guess that's it. I'll have to talk about the others later, if there are any."

He starts to get up, but stops, looking at the items on the table. "Careful with the book, please. It's an original."

Getting out of the Circus that night had been fairly easy. Jean-Claude and Anita thought he had a shift at the strip club, but really he had swapped shifts with Stephan, claiming to have a date.

Which, in a way, he did. He'd sent an email to Asher earlier, and the vampire had agreed to meet him at the damaged club. Jason planned on packing up the things he had there, then spend the time before he left with Asher. The show didn't start until Monday, but he planned on staying in the nexus for the rest of the weekend.

Slipping through the club, he was still in a bit of awe at the damage Ashe had done. There was still a ways to go, even with the work had been done so far.

He took the stairs carefully, calling out to Asher before stepping through the doorway at the bottom.

To: Asher [hisgoldfinch@damnedcircus.net]
From: Schuyler, J [STLpomme@damnedcircus.net]
Subject: I needed to let you know.

I know you said that you needed time to set things up, and I found a way to give you that time without you having to worry about me. There is a reality tv competition of sorts in the Nexus that I joined. I'll be gone anywhere from four to fifteen weeks, but no one from here will be able to contact me. Those in the competition are completely isolated from the outside world.

You're the only one who knows. I'm not telling anyone else I'm going, I'll just disappear. I'll make sure that you're given the necessary links and that so you can see what's going on in the house, and so you'll be able to see me.

Please, don't be upset with me.

Returning to his room at the Circus, Jason goes to his bed and curls up in a ball in the center, pulling all the blankets over his head.

He'd made his promise, and a promise was made to him. He would stay strong and not give up and Asher would return.

He prayed that Asher was able to keep that promise, because he was so close to giving up.
